A day late, but for those who haven't seen this photo posted on USPS Twitter, I thought some might find this humorous.

Anything to promote the use of the US Mail, I guess.

Ironically, the image suggests he's mailing a package in a USPS street collection box. Isn't that against postal regulations, since anything above 13 oz. has to be presented at the Post Office window?

If so, just more confirmation that the USPS has the most bizarre / illogical postal regs of any country on Earth (I always laugh over the USPS rules on "stiff" envelopes - hilarious)

I was told by my postmaster that if I had the postage on it, I didn't have to hand it to them. Just put it in the drop.

If it's over 13 ozs. it's against the rules to put it in a collection box with only postage stamps on it (because there's no way of tracking it should it contain anything illegal).

These labels are supposed to be on every letter collection box across the country:

For those who do ignore this rule, you're subject to having your parcel returned to sender with this label:

I guess the real question is how strictly the USPS enforces that requirement, but since you wouldn't want to pay $$ in postage only to have the parcel returned to sender, it's best to play by the rules, than attempt to challenge it.

I think the piece would be separated out by the collector of the box and sent to a screening station. At the PO the clerk is required to ask several questions of the person at the counter as to contents, makes a note as to answers, views the package for return address, etc. and still sets aside for a random check. As the label states above with the return, the PO would accept the piece if it had a METER indicia as it would be identifiable to sender. The small package might be under the 13 oz. weight limit. The larger piece could also be under the wt. limit. The top line of the 'prohibit' label really says it all.
