A while back I bought a stamp on
ebay listed as a "number 1 or number 4" which gave me pause. It appeared to be a four margin stamp (barely on one side) in nice condition. For some reason, bidding stalled and I won the lot for about $25, thinking, if it's a #4 that's pretty good, and if it's a #1, well . . .When I received it, I was pretty sure it was on laid paper (a #1) so sent it off to the Vincent Graves Greene Foundation (my first experience with certification.) I was worried about the possibility of it being a fake, or altered in some way, e.g. rebacked or repaired. Today I received the certificate with those magic four words, "genuine in all respects." It goes to show that even in this fast-paced world there is still the chance of a find. Next I'm going for a #32 like watermark found . . . !
