Different Printers

The Austrian Post has for the last few years contracted
out to foreign printers much of the Austrian stamps production
which was previously assigned to the Austrian State Printer.

Here below are some from the series of Austrian automobiles
and motorcycles issued in the last few years.

Three were printed by the OeSD (State Printer) and one by
the Hungarian Printer, ANY Security Printing Company PLC.

Can you tell the difference and why?

All were printed using the offset/litho method but one
has what appears to be stochastic screening compared to
the more regular uniform rosette type of screening.

I can see the green 145 has the stochastic screening in the background. The 70 and red 145 have a background screen angle of about 20 degrees, whereas the screen angle on the 220 is about 45 degrees. The screen densities seem about the same for these three.

If some issues were reprinted by different printers, there may be some varieties to hunt for.

Yes the green 145C also appears to me to have stochastic screening
and that's the one printed by the Hungarian printer.

What do you mean by a background screen angle of about 20 degrees ?

The screen dots in the background are arranged in lines. They are not true horizontal and vertical lines. The array is rotated about 20 degrees counter clockwise on the 70c and red 145c. The rotation on the 220c is 45 degrees, so a grouping of four dots actually forms a diamond (or a square balancing on one of its vertices).

Thanks Robert, I see now what you're getting at.

I have to admit I never noticed or paid attention to that
feature in any ofsett printed stamps, but I will now.

what you call the rosette type is achieved by different angles of the crossed-lines type screens using the CMYK colours: 75 for cyan, 15 for magenta, 0 for yellow and 45 for black.

Well to me the areas on the blue moped look like rosettes,
whereas the dark burgundy background is just regular screening.

there is NO difference in screening! Just a single colour magenta-red with a screen angle of 15 degrees or a few colours - each under a different angle, together giving the idea of a rosette! Cyanblue 75 degrees, black 45 degrees and yellow 0 degrees.

Here is a modern stamp which was printed with 2 different angle settings of the halftone screens. It is the 2002 Albrecht Thaer stamp from Germany. The stamp shown is Michel 2255 I. with 45 degree by 45 degree screen settings. The other printing is the 15 degree x 75 degree screen setting (Mi. 2255 II.). The close up pics show the difference in two stamps.

Sometimes I have difficulty in seeing the angles like on the blue moped areas
of the Austrian stamp above but this one is pretty clear to me.
