Hi to all - I wonder if anyone has used the Willy Grubben Essay Catalogue for classifying Belgium Essays, Proofs, etc. It was reprinted in 1983, the last I found, but I only see one for sale for $125.00. Anybody seen this? Is it worth the price? Thanks in advance.. Ken

Three things you have to take into consideration.

One - prices for literature today is outrageous.

Two - the postage and handling for any piece of literature is 'almost' as expensive as the book, sometime more, sometimes less.

Three - this is the most important one IMHO, is that you have to have a real special interest in the topic to make it worth your while to buy the book.

The plus side of all of this is that any reference material, 'usually' pays for itself in the long run anyway.

Just my thoughts of course.

If you belonged to the APS, you could probably check the book out from the APRL library for about $14. Its a loan but you can commit the important parts to memory or some other medium.

Edit: for curiosity I checked and there is a French book from 1933 on this subject from the authors.

Catalogue illustre des essais des timbres de Belgique et Congo-Belge / ([1ere ed.] --) / Grubben, Willy. -- Bruxelles: W. Grubben,, 1933. (Book) G6011 .E78 G885c
Location: APRL

Hungary, you got it - that's the one that was reprinted in 1983. I already have the Dr. Stes Belgium Proof Book which isn't much help, and I'd trade it for Willy's book, if anybody had one! Thanks for looking up the info - Ken

Hi Rein - my problem is that I don't know what I don't know. I bought proof and essay lots which were not identified, mostly from European sellers. I really like them, and they are in my Lighthouse Belgian Album, but I can't identify them. I have hundreds of them, and I see some of them offered on ebay and Delcampe for hundreds of dollars, but they aren't identified there, either. So, back to square one. Short of scanning them up here, I don't know which pages would help me. By the way, I bought many of these from sellers in the Netherlands, including one I posted up here, and turned out to be a proof of Alphonso XIII of Spain! Anything you suggest would be of help - Thanks in Advance -- Ken
