Canada stamp # 171 blue with the catalog stating a quantity of 888,000 and it is an 8 cents stamp. The 8's alone should interest some collectors. However, it catalogs much less than Canada # 158 (Bluenose) with quantity 1,045,000 and Canada # 176 (Grand Pre, NS) with quantity 2,811,000. Does the original face value affect the stamp's value somewhat in this case even though the quantity is less or is it that the other stamps are more popular and bigger in size?

Isn't there more to it than that? What about visual appeal? For me this is important so I would buy the 'Bluenose' stamp, actually l did, but I wouldn't buy the 'King George' stamp. I realise this is my personal preference and that other collectors think differently from me, but that is my choice, and for some others I suspect.

My understanding is that the Canada #171 was in use for only 30 days, when rate changes took place. It was a couple of months after when the 8 cents orange of the same set came out. There was also an other reason why this second stamp came out, and, that was because there was confusion with some PO employees getting mixed up with the 5 cents blue of the same issue. Also, because the 8 cents blue did not meet with the UPU colour issuing codes they had in place at that time (1930).

There was an interesting article in the last quarter 2013 (October, November, December) BNAPS BNA Topics on the Canada # 169 rotary press vs # 169a flat plate. Did anyone read the article? |

The Bluenose is considered by many to be a great design, and this causes higher demand. |

What is interesting with this stamp and others including some varieties that are supposed to be scarcer is that there are usually many of them online for sale. This means that many collectors of Canada probably don't have a copy of it because of its higher price. |

Bujutsu: There was also a letter to the editor in the latest BNA Topics that related to the # 169 and # 169a stamp article from before. |
