Haunted Canada Stamps

I noticed that the Haunted Canada set of stamps is up for pre-order on the CP website....release date? Friday the 13th of course!

IMO... not very scary.. just a pretty ugly set of stamps.

I have a fondness for ghost stories and these stamps reminded me of some of my favourites. Stories by Algernon Blackwood, Walter De La Mare, Marjorie Bowen, Sheridan Le Fanu, and, most of all, M.R.James.

The modern day ghost story is a natural development from these old masters but difficult to get right. One of the very best is a film called "The Return" starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, written by Adam Sussman and directed by first timer Asif Kapadia. With nods to "Psycho" and 'The Shining" it is set in present day Texas and is a real chiller with a neat, though disturbing ending.

Another ghost story film well worth tracking down is the film "Thunder Rock" set on the Great Lakes and made in 1942, it stars Michael Redgrave. There is also the later BBC film version starring Charles Dance. Both are good and based on the story by Robert Ardrey. Might be harder to find that one.

However I am disappointed that Canada Post keeps using iStock photos. There is no originality when they do this.

I used to live in a house that was haunted.

I have a few stories about it, but, it is out of context for in here <G>

The house no longer exists. I doubt too if it would have qualified for the issuance of a stamp.

I have a book from the mid 80s called "Ghost Stories of Canada" by Val Clery. Several interesting ghost stories, but none that made it into this stamp series.
