Canada's polocy was to not issue a postage stamp with a living person depicted, other than Royalty.

However that all changed with the August 15, 2005 issuance of the 50 cent SC 2118 Oscar Peterson.

No Bieber stamps and no Celine Dion stamps either!

Since this is the first of a series to honour Canadian comedians, you would think they would have started with the late great John Candy (at least put a deceased guy on the first issue). But there's a long list of famous Canadian comedians to choose from after that:

Dan Akroyd
Jim Carrey
Tommy Chong
Tom Green
Phil Hartman (RIP)
Eugene Levy
Howie Mandel
Leslie Nielson (RIP)
Rick Moranis
Colin Mochrie
Any of the Kids in the Hall
Catherine O'Hara
Ryan Reynolds
Seth Rogen
Martin Short
Wayne and Shuster (RIP)
Dave Thomas

Plus a lot of others

Wert is correct. Several other Canadians appeared before Oscar Peterson, which included hockey players and astronauts.

Canada Post intended to issue a stamp for John Candy a few years ago, but his estate turned down the offer.

This one is a tipping point for me. I am ready to pull the plug on new Canadian stamps of living persons from now on. 20-40 yrs from now I will still be able to buy them in bulk at 60% face, when the living persons illustrated are no longer living ....

Maybe they could have a series of Mike Myers stamps, one for each character in all of the many movies he was in? Plus supporting characters also of course.

It is the characters portrayed by the actor and the stories of the films, cinema and the television productions that influenced and changed the earlier and modern mind set about cinema and the comedic value to people enjoying the films and TV that are remembered and enjoyed and appreciated by many.
