What an ugly little scrap of paper. It's sad that it has deteriorated so badly.

Wouldn't it be great if some lottery winner or ultra-rich philanthropist had bought it simply to put it on free display in a museum so that everyone could enjoy it for nothing?

Interesting thought. But I do wonder how many (non-Collectors) would come to look at something that looks like this...

Tell people that something is remarkable and they'll come and see it. Take the Mona Lisa for example. It's a dull, ordinary painting (IMHO) but is surrounded by such a mystique that everyone want to see it.

I think this stamp is speaking to us. How we care for the stamps we have.
To me its a red piece of paper with ink on it. (to which my wife agrees, and thinks the buyers are idiots)
It would take more than a story to interest me in a stamp. But, then I buy my stamps to either fill the blank spaces in a collection, or for aesthetic value, (of which this red thing has none for me).

I'll tell you what I would do with this stamp... Get a Scott International Brown album and finally fill that British Guiana #13 spot :) I agree with others with condition, but it is worth it for the bragging rights alone. The best thing about the new image of the stamp is seeing the back with all the previous owners initials on it.

I agree that it is "worth it" for bragging rights alone...but not over 9 million. There is a limit to how much bragging rights are worth. I guess if you have that much cash, 9 mill is much like 40 or 50 dollars.

Whoever bought it may plan to keep it a couple of years and then sell it to get the money back...and maybe make a bit on it.

The Linn's Stamp News article previously posted has been REVISED. It now states the purchase price of the stamp was $9.48 million (including 20% buyer premium):
