Here are several scans of my latest purchase. A 1906 New Zealand Travelling Post Office cancel "TRAVLg P.O.Auckland", dated march 24, 1906. I have shown the rear with cancel, a front of the card and a close up of the cancel. Enjoy.
Absolutely fascinating postcard! But what are they looking at? And what in the world is that gentleman in the forefront "sitting" on (or is it just an illusion)?
It looks like a portable seat on a stick that I have seen in some very old movies. Doesn't look comfortable! I guess they are looking down the hole. I hope their definition of soaping the geyser isn't the same thing as vandals do to fountains in this country! Ha!
I found this hard to believe so did some googling. It seems that adding soap to geyser vents can actually create some spectacular eruptions. At about the time of this card, people would dump lye in the vents. Hopefully, they stood well-back.
The gentleman in the foreground is sitting on a shooting stick.
I've no idea how comfortable they are to sit on, but I have a very clear recollection of being thwacked across the back with one by my school rugby coach 50 years ago, when he thought we in the scrum weren't getting our backs low enough.
