Allied Military Government

More nice covers postagedueguy! Love the special delivery (pink label) cover.

I am not a specialist of the AMG issues; I collect many Germany definitive series stamps with an eye toward postal markings, plate flaws, and unusual covers, mostly. So, here are a couple more AMGs from my accumulation.

The first is a packet card fragment. Parcel was sent from Kiel-Wik (Wik is a northern suburb) to an area further up the peninsula, closer to Denmark. Receiving/revenue protection cancel was done at rural Nieby (contract postal place), which is near a wildlife preserve.





The second item is a stamp, the 6 pf Braunschweig printing with an American censor marking. The complete marking is shown below the stamp. Civil Censorship Division (CCD) Group A was located in Munich. Use of this particular machine, three-line roller, red marking began in February 1946. Source of information is Karl-Heinz Riemer's Die Postzensur Der Allierten In Besetzten Deutschland Nach Der II. Weltkrieg .

Here is another cancellation of a contract postal/mail collection place similar to postagedueguy's Linden (postal region 20, Braunschweig/Hannover) shown in the the above posting.

This one is Enge ueber Leck (postal region 24, Schleswig/Hamburg). Cancel is on a pair of the 15 pf German printings. Cerise star on map from Michel-Atlas zur Deutschland-Philatelie shows precise location. Leck is 5 km north of Enge.

According to Wikipedia, the viillage (pop. 1114) is now known as Enge-Sande.

I bought a c. 1949 Scott National album a few years ago and these pages, about 10 if I recall correctly were in the back after the CSA pages.

pcerio, I found the same thing when I purchased a Scott Great Britain album published in 1948. It included pages for the London printing of the AMG stamp issues. I posted a query about pages for the Scott National Album some time back wondering if the AMG pages were one time included in the album. This answers that question and thanks for posting! I personally have always considered the AMG issues to be part of the U.S. Possessions/Administration area and include such pages in my album.

Geoffha questioned why the Arc de Triomphe stamps of 1944 and 1945 were considered occupation stamps. This is how the Scott Catalog had them listed for decades 2N1-2N20. The Scott album for France included a page with "Occupation Stamps" "Issued jointly by the Allied Military Government of the United States and Great Britain" These stamps originated in Washington D.C. and London and were not produced by a liberated French government. I will admit I have not looked at the listing in recent catalogs so this may well have changed some time ago.

There was never an Allied Military Government in France, so Scott simply misunderstood and gave them the wrong heading. Stamps from around the liberation period were printed in the US, in London (Dulac) and in Algiers.

The US and allies never "occupied" France, just liberated the country. There was never a need for an allied postal system
