Clasped hands, hammer and sickle, printed by photogravure, and issued by Yugoslavia (Trieste) in 1949 for Labor Day, Scott No. 4. Note: I believe that the goat's head in this stamp's design may represent the Istrian Goat from the regional coat of arms.

Norway celebrated the 200th anniversary of its constitution "Grunnloven" this year. This stamp belongs to a set of 4; the hand on the left is that of a man, the one on the right that of a woman. I think it's a great way to symbolize equality.

Hi Nethryk, That one from Yugoslavia must be one of the first stamps with that gesture!

The hands are not drawn in detail, but the gesture is unmistakable. This souvenir sheet was issued by Columbia in 2005 and calls to the fight against poverty. Design by M. A. Castiblanco.

25 years ago today the Berlin Wall, and with it the European Iron Curtain, began to come down. These two UN Peace Doves, drawn with only a few strokes of the pen, can instantly be recognized as two hands clasped in greeting. Let them be a symbol of the day.

During those first weeks after the wall opened (Nov. 9th, 1989), countless citizens from both sides of it came with sledge hammers and even small hammers and chisels to take it down. Old and young, strong and weak, they came by the thousands.
