Am I looking in the correct place to find plate numbers on these stamps? I can see a single digit on the two pence. Looks like a seven. On the one penny, can't see anything.

Stampcrow,
I find plate numbers (on the 1p)on the right side of the stamp when rotated like your second and third posted images. That said, it is often very difficult to discern with wear and cancellations. Hope this helps.

Plate numbers for the plates of Britain #33, for example, will be found in the scroll work on either side. See the note after Scott #33.

only the stamps with letters in all 4 corners have the plate numbers in the scrollwork. The penny red you show needs to be plated from the die, alphabet, letter positions, and other marks.

The two pence appears to be plate 7. That is what I see in the right side scroll work.

chipg, sad to say I didn't even notice that the example of #33 in the catalog has letters in all four corners. Is mine not a #33 than?

The penny stamp could be one of several.. SG 17, SG 24, SG 26, SG 40 depending on perforation (14 or 16), watermark (small or large crown). There are several more numbers to be considered but those are the basic and most probable ones. The SG numbers listed above would convert to Scott#8,#12,#14,#20. So,it can be assessed and identified using that criteria but plating would be difficult without detailed knowledge and depends of the alphabet used, die used, etc, etc.
From experience it is most likely a SG#40 (Scott#20) 1d Red with large crown watermark and perforated 14

Thanks. I do know it is perf 14. I'm not familiar with the large/small crown watermarks. I can see the watermark but large or small....IDK
