Since no one has yet commented on the anniversary, how many remembered that July 1 represents the beginning of the First US Postage Stamps issued in 1847?

That's 167 years ago today!

It's also the first day of the fiscal year, so Special Tax Stamps were always good from July 1 to June 30.

Actually, July 1 contains a couple of other postal "firsts":

The Post Office Department became the US Postal Service on July 1, 1971 (43 years ago):
