Handicraft - Tapa Cloth

Tapa cloth (or simply tapa) is a barkcloth made in the islands of the Pacific Ocean, including some villages in the Marquesas Islands. Tapa is often worn on formal occasions such as weddings. Another use is as a blanket at night or for room dividers. It is also often found hung on the walls as decoration.

Kete are traditional baskets made and used by the M#257;ori people. They are woven from the leaves of New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax), with two handles at the top. Other materials are sometimes used, including the leaves of the nikau palm and cabbage tree.
The stamp set features six finely crafted kete by the following artists:

A seamstress sewing fabric and a machinist, designed by Hatem El Mekki (1918-2003), printed by photogravure, and issued by Tunisia on March 6, 1978 as one of a set of three stamps publicizing the 5th development plan to create new jobs, Scott No. 714.

The Companhia União Fabril (CUF) was a Portuguese conglomerate which has operations in chemical, textile, machinery, construction, shipbuilding, among other industries. One of the commemorative stamps depicts modern textile industry.
