It is Ethiopia, 1894, 16g, Menelik II (SG7 and probably Scott #7).

He's actually, Menelik II Negus of Ethiopia (Abyssinia, by then)from 1889 to 1913. Famous for defeating the Italians on the battle of Adwa. The stamp is SG # 7 the 16 "guerches" (16 guerches = thaler) value from the 1894 series.

"Abyssinian" is the adjectival form of the proper noun "Abyssinia."

The name of the country was Abyssinia and people from there were Abyssinian.

Yes to all above, EXCEPT the people were never called Abyssinian. That was a European designation. The stamp reads (in the Amharic script) Ethiopia. All our old stamp books list it as Abysinnia up to a point - it is NOT derogatory; indeed, my niece is named Abyssinia!, just not the name of the nation or the people. Much like we call another country China but the Chinese call it Jung-Gwo (Middle Earth)- there is no Chi-na in China.
Just a minor point. PS, I am an Ethiopian specialist, esp cancels, rates, registration (any cover related info)- please contact me if needed-
oh, the stamp listed is obviously pre-UPU - they needed to put the country name in European (french) script. When they did, Abyssinia dropped from philatelic terms and we all called it Ethiopia.

I did a search on ebay, to see what people are selling this stamp for, as I want to do the same, and look at what else is up for sale, very nice!
