Hi, new to this. I'm not a stamp collector (I'm more of a coin person), but my parents and a few more family members older than I am used to collect. Me, I haven't even used a stamp in my entire life, I'm too young for that, I grew up with e-mail and mobile phones. So I know absolutely nothing about stamps.

I've posted this in the coin forum under General Discussion, so I'll just copy and paste it here.

I found this box while cleaning out my shelf, it is full of Indonesian stamps from 1951 to 1964. The stamps were curved and rather yellowed from the storage, Indonesia's humidity is a killer for paper.

I've sorted them by denomination (or face value or nominal or something like that?) and found the years, but I have no idea about value. I read a site where a guy was asking several million for each stamp, I read in another site that they were only worth a few US cents each.

Kancil 1956

Kancil 1957

Kopi 1960

Linsang 1956

Banteng 1956, Kelapa 1960, Soekarno 1964? 1965? (used?)

Badak 1956, Soekarno 1961

Transport 1964, Soekarno 1951, Udang 1963

Ganefo 1963

Malaria 1962 (used? just dirty?)

Ganefo 1963

Soekarno 1951

Kakap 1963

Ganefo 1963

Ramayana 1962 (I'm sure this is used)

Soekarno 1964, Soekarno 1953

Soekarno 1951, Asian 1962

Ganefo 1963

Ganefo 1963

Soekarno 1964

Showed these to my dad since I couldn't find anything about them, he said these aren't stamps but they're used for some legal stuff. I don't really understand, but okay, these aren't stamps. They can't be used anymore either because now Materai Tempel needs to be Rp6000 each.

And these aren't all, I found two more envelopes with stamps in them which I haven't seen what stamps are inside. One opened, the other sealed. I remember my aunt giving me the unsealed one, but I don't remember where the sealed one comes from. Unfortunately I've misplaced them, might be a while before I find them again. Probably never if it's gotten mixed up with stuff that isn't mine. There's too much stuff here. It doesn't bother me too much, from the clear window on the envelope it looks like common modern stamps that I've seen many times on advertisement mail.

I would like help determining the value of these stamps. Any tips on conservation would be much appreciated too.

I don't have an album yet, I don't know when I'll be able to get one but it'll probably be a long time. Not very easy to get around here unless you have your own car or someone to drive you.

Thanks!

I'm sorry but I do not understand what the headers on the right side mean, I can't click them for an explanation either. Could you explain to me?

I had a quick look at the Stanley Gibbons values for your stamps and most are estimated at between 10p and 50p UK currency. That value is based on an excellent specimen stamp. Some, or perhaps most, of your stamps are not in good condition so would have minimal value. Anything torn or stained will be worthless and should be removed from any better examples.
I think any value in the examples you have posted would be in the revenue stamps so you could research them.

Thank you scotzm! They aren't in good condition, they are yellowed and some are folded. The Malaria one, I can't figure out if it was used or if it just got dirty.

I guess the guy that was asking at least 1 million each for 1 stamp in his blogspot got all of them overpriced. I can show you the page, but I'm new here so I don't think I'm allowed to post a link.

Does the stamp being stamped by the post office count as being stained?

I could not find anything when I googled about Materai Tempel. I will try searching in English and see how it goes.

Stamp collecting looks like a dying hobby in Indonesia, I have not seen a stamp album for sale yet when I go to malls.

Being in poor condition means very very little value if any at all, SlurExe97. Your malaria stamp is both used and stained, I'm afraid.
But...on the plus side is your willingness to actually look for stamps in markets etc. Most countries produce vast quantities of stamps these days and that may be turning potential collectors away. In the past fewer sets were produced and demand was greater. So, think SETS if you want to buy and collect...the older the better but MUST be in good condition. A whole set is occasionally difficult to complete due to one stamp value being a special postage rate and infrequently used so searching and finding then buying it gives a sense of achievement... and worth to a set. Just a suggestion but you could also find some information about your revenue stamps and see where it can lead...

I wouldn't be able to figure out it was used by myself. Where did you see the mark that tells that it's been used? I don't see a round "stamp mark" (is there a name for this?) on it and that is the only way I know it's used.

Too bad about the humidity here destroying paper so quickly (for example my mom's got books from the 90s, the paper is really yellow and brittle already even though they are not read much, just stored). I'll try getting them to Canada by September where it's drier, or else it'll have to stay in Indonesia for another year.

I'm looking around in online markets to see how much these stamps sell for, just to get a general idea. I've been looking in ebay, the single stamps don't usually go for more than a dollar each. The revenue stamps go for a little higher. Maybe it's because there isn't too much interest for Indonesian stamps at present.

I'll see if I can make a set out of mine, I doubt it though. There are a lot of weird denominations I don't have.

Indonesia actually makes a lot of stamp designs, but nobody uses them anymore now. It's too bad because I think the designs look better every year starting from the early 2000s.
