I think I see the word "trybunal" in the cancellation stamp. May someone post the reading of the entire cancellation and its meaning?

Hello,

Google search found 'Piotrków Trybunalski' - which matches the cancel on the stamp. A city in Poland occupied by this Germans and called Jewish Ghetto. Lots more to be found using this city in a search if interested. Hope this helps.

Very nice cancel on this one , a keeper.

The stamp itself features the ruins of the castle at Bedzin & was issued December 1946 as a definitive. It was printed in two colours, olive & brown, though the shades of each are quite varied. Total printing for both colours is about 98.5 million so it's not the most valuable of stamps although you can make a nice page showing the shade varieties.

The stamp was issued imperf. although there are heaps of private perfs

What do you mean by "private perforation"? Does it mean that someone takes an un-perforated stamp and produces perforations? Why? What's the purpose?

Yes, "private perforations" means taking stamps that are officially imperf. & perforating them yourselves. A business that uses a lot of stamps might do this to make it easier & quicker to separate the stamps. I'm guessing that some Post Offices might also have done this for the convenience of their staff although I have no evidence to back this up.

In the immediate post-war years in Poland a fair number of stamps were issued imperf. Times were still tough, a huge demand for stamps for folks trying to find relatives, the communication systems still a bit difficult, letters & cards the chief method of finding out news. Equipment for perforating stamps in short supply & possibly not in the best condition, so it didn't matter if the stamps were perf or not, getting them out would be the thing.
