Since no one mentioned it today, it's only fitting to remember that Saturday, August 9, 2014 is Smokey the Bear's 70th Birthday!

As most US collectors will know, he was featured on a US Postage Stamp:

And the AP/CBS News even did a story about him here:

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/smokey-...ocial-media/

And something I didn't know:

Quote:
Smokey Bear was created in 1944 because of fears that America's enemies would set forest fires while most U.S. firefighters were in battle overseas.

Of course, Smokey was featured in numerous cinderellas/poster stamps through the years, several of which are outlined at this previous link:

Remember, only YOU can prevent Forest Fires Wildfires.

Rudy Wendelin was a Forest Service employee who was an artist was was considered Smokey's caretaker from 1944 to 1973. Rudy was also the designer of three stamps, the 1964 John Muir stamp, the 1969 John Wesley Powell stamp, and of course the 1984 Smokey Bear stamp.

I got to meet him too. It's not all that many people who remember him traveling around and going to different zoos and even a few schools.
