Number (2) and script (5) don't match. A lot of the script and ornaments have missing details. Unless anybody can ID it, it looks like a fake to me.

I don't collect revenues, but as I mentioned, the letters don't match and the design is lacking/changed details.

I've never see this. If nobody else chimes in, I would suggest that you contact the Korean Stamp Society and ask them. They should be able to give you an authoritative answer.

Good eye, Khj! What an interesting stamp.

The character that Khj mentions is this one I've highlighted:

which is the Chinese character for "5", so that's one of the reasons this stamp doesn't really make sense. The design does appear to be lifted from the 5-mon stamp (Scott #1), with a change in color and in the numeral.

I have this older, kind of creaky catalog produced by the Korea Stamp Society (2nd ed., 1990), in which it refers to a "2 mon green fantasy" in the notes of the 5-mon issue, so perhaps that's your stamp.

I agree with Khj that it might be worth trying to contact the KSS. I should add reluctantly that I've tried to contact them several times by email with questions about membership info, etc., and have never received a reply.

Do let us know what you learn, if anything.

I wouldn't toss it out. It may be something that a specialist of forgeries would be interested in.

You might also want to contact this guy:

and see if this is new to him or not. It looks like he has not yet written up anything about Korea yet, but I think he gathers info pretty far ahead of what he publishes.

Thanks all, I emailed the Philatic Federation of Korea yesterday but no reply yet. Will try the others as suggested.

Thanks for chiming in, Dave!

ClassicalStamps, owner of stampforgeries.com, is an active member of this forum. You can PM him and ask him to take a look at this thread.

I did very briefly look through the Penn family website (KSS), which has pretty detailed info on the early Korean stamps and also a good section on revenues, but I did not see your stamp.
