I have been inventorying my postal stationery. I have come to the "G"s. Germany falls into this catagory. I have a large amount of this country.

I have had to think about how to divide Germany up into seperate collecting niches (countries if you will). Here is my ever changing breakdown (This is for postal stationery ONLY)

1. Germany (Pre unification)
Early Germany, kingdoms, monarcies, dukedoms
The seperate listed small countries will remain under their
own names (Baden, Saar, Wurtz.,etc.)
2. German Private Post
All of this hugh catagory
3. Germany
From 1871 ish
* colonies (see note at bottom) I am thinking of placing
the seperate colonies under the actual countries names,
and keeping them seperate from the mass of Germany material)
*WWI occupied countries
*WWII occupied countries
*General country as a whole
4. Germny: WWII ending (1945-1946)
* allied control (US, BRIT,French,Soviet,Control Council)
5. Germany: East (1945-1990)
German Democratic Republic
6. Germany: West (1945-1990
7. Germany: Berlin West (1945 - 1990)
This could be a sub catagory of West Germany
8. Germany Reunified: 1990 to current

This is a tentitive breakdown of what I will consider seperate listings in my data base, and album binders.

What do you all think? I have left out anything?

All of the Germany empire countries will be maintained under their seperate country listings.

Feedback appreciated.

Hi!
Well, I can't find fault with your groupings and think they make perfect sense. This last year I found myself facing a similar situation and ended up with pretty much the same separations and chronological order. Ha, it makes one understand why the classic cutoff is 1939-40, for the world's countries sure did change a lot after that.

Gee, if someone wants a geo-political education, just take up stamp collecting!

Thanks for the replies, was thinking no one reads this!
mobileman44: I agree, my original concept was just to collect up to 1900, but that went out the window with a little here and alittle there! Always a collector.
jamesw: yep! ;-)
