This 1998 definitive stamp of the Republic of South Africa depicts a geometric tortoise (Psammobates geometric). Because of dietary and habitat restrictions, this species is critically endangered. From Wikipedia, "The geometric tortoise is naturally restricted to the far southwestern corner of Western Cape Province,m South Africa."  |

This 2010 computer-vended stamp of Costa Rica shows a female olive ridley sea turtle, or Pacific ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) making her way across the sand. This is the most prolific species of sea turtle in the world. According to Wikipedia, "These turtles...are best known for their unique mass nesting arriba where thousands of females come together on the same beach to lay eggs."   |
