Nethryk,
The designs in the Japanese stamps in your last two post are gorgeous!
Any information on who the artists or engravers might be?

Stamp Mole - Thanks! I'm glad that you also like the designs and engraving work on the two Japan stamps posted above. Unfortunately, I do not yet know the names of the artists or engravers who produced them. I hope to learn more about these and other stamps issued by Japan during an upcoming visit to the American Philatelic Society's library. If I do find any useful information, I'll be sure to share it here in a future post.

Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp depicting what appears to be a type of sea turtle, printed by photogravure, and issued for use in Fernando Po(o) on November 23, 1961 as one of a set of four stamps for Stamp Day, Scott No. B12. Mystery note: The depicted reptile does not actually resemble any of the four marine turtle species known to come ashore to lay their eggs on Bioko Island (formerly called Fernando Pó). Also, the Scott Catalogue (2008 ed.) egregiously misidentifies this creature as an "Ethiopian Tortoise!" - nethryk |
