Is the 2013 Unitrade Specialized Catalog of Canadian Stamps the best source to learn about Canadian Stamps? Or is the Scott's a better choice. Since I am new to collecting Canada Stamps. I not only do I want to learn what stamps were issued but something about each stamp.

Hi Tinman. In answer to your question, I'd say yes, Unitrade is a much better book for information to Canadian stamps than Scotts. Contains quantities printed, designers and lots of varieties.
But if you really want an inside story on Canuck stamps, I'd recommend trying to find a copy of this long out of print volume as well. Can't remember where I found this, but this 1970 book actually has descriptions and sometimes histories of each issue (up to that date of course). It's a great little source of Canadian philatelic trivia.

Happy hunting!

Unitrade is an outstanding source of information on Canadien stamps. All varieties are listed and Canada has many perf varieties. If you're interested in Canadien revenue stamps E.S. VanDam has an excellent catalog and offers stamps for sale as well.

TinMan:

I have to throw in my 2˘ -- I'm a BIG FAN of Unitrade. I believe it to be far superior to Scott for Canadian collectors. I've learned more about Canada reading Unitrade than I learned about U.S. reading the Scott Specialized. -- if that makes sense.

A thread you should review:

My Canadien collection is all gone now but I certainly enjoyed it much more than US. I collected everything up until 2000 and had a large revenue collection as well. It probably helped that the exchange rate favored the US dollar at that time too.

Now I only focus on a very small specialized field of US stamps.

Tinman,

I have an older (2010) catalogue you can have. I also previously mentioned I have a couple of Canada albums available, one of which you can have for the cost of postage only.

Brian send me a P.M. and tell me how much to send you a check for and where to mail it. It will be in the mail tomorrow or as soon as you tell me how much I owe you for it all. If you want to trust me take it to the P.O. and that way you will know for sure how much I owe you. P.M. sent to you with my address. Just curious which Albums are they?

I think I donated mine to the youth table at the stamp show in Grand Rapids hoping someone could make use of it.

That's OK kcaramat thanks but Brian has one. See his post above. So I'll be OK . At least for a starter. I probably will decide a cut off date just like I did in my U.S. collection. I cut it off at the year 2012. Anything after that will just be an accident. He had told me earlier about the two Stamp albums but didn't say anything about the Unitrade Catalog. Also I hadn't thought previously to inquire about one.

As a fellow Canadian stamp noob, I can vouch that Unitrade is way better than Scott. The layout itself is amazing and it makes it easier to identify. HOWEVER, I will say that at times it can be information overload, especially with some of the early issues.

I have two albums, both are used.

The first one I offer for free - a Scott "minuteman" style specialized Canada album (with provinces). It has a few used stamps left in it and numerous mounts and markings. I bought it new in my youth more than 30 years ago, but have long-since upgraded.

The second is a Scott Specialized Canada album in a green two-post binder and is in like-new condition (also contains provinces). I forgot what I offered it-for previously. I want to be consistant, so I'd better check :)

Edit: The Scott Specialized I mentioned is $30.

Anyways, it you are interested in one of the albums, it would be best to ship the catalogue and album together to save on postage. I'm not sure if I could get away with media mail, but worst-case it will cost $12.45 to ship both flat-rate.

I will send you a PM ...

Brian

Tinman:

Here is a link to Library & Archives Canada. Click on "Canadian Stamps"

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/...80608_e.html

It will provide you with all the details of each stamp and the story behind it being issued. The database is current up to 2010 when updates were discontinued.

Brian ship both Albums and the Catalog together as Media mail or what I call Book Rate. I will send you a check for $43 unless it costs more than that to mail them. Do you want me to wait until you find out before I send you the check just to make sure or if it costs more than that, I can just send you another check to cover the difference?
