I love to compare the old with the new ... here's the Imperial Hotel (Blackpool) postcard (circa 1911) next to a photograph of the same (4 star) Imperial Hotel still in operation today! |

I agree wt1. I really like a "Then & Now" perspective to the old photos.

Bujutsu: that Liverpool Landing Stage is special! Here's a multi-city-view RPP of Glasgow, courtesy of Valentine's. I love the instructions (which suggest the age), especially when crammed into the stamp box. Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

Hi All As soon as I saw ikey's postings on this structure, I had to go in to my British postcard collection and dig mine out. Here are the two that I have. Note, I am not sure if the structure slightly to the left in my third card is the same or not, but it does look close even though it is inscribed "The Cross & Rows". Chimo Bujutsu |

Bujutsu Your second postcard shows a view about 75 yards up the road from your first. Various streets come together at the Cross. The Rows are a feature of Chester, originally houses they are now populated with interesting shops, cafes and pubs. I know because I live about 9 miles away, we visit often for shopping, and socialising in those pubs! DavidR |

Actually, Bujutsu, guided by the stairs next to the store front, I think the GPH is at the very far left of your view card. Nice cards! |

Thanks all for your comments.
David R , do they look as ornate inside still as they do from the outside? They must be interesting shops in those buildings?
Ikey, I think you are right.

The Furness Abbey in Cumbria UK. An interesting side note in Ken Burns' documentary, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea", was the railways' promotion of tourism, and the role that played in the development of the national park system. I've seen 'destination promotion' cards published by/for America's Union Pacific Railroad, by Canada's Canadian Pacific Railway, etc. But this is the first time I've come across (the much earlier) postcards published by Raphael Tuck & Sons for the UK's Furness Railway, which operated from 1846-1922. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furness_RailwayA contemporary translation of the railway's "CAVENDO TUTUS" motto might be "SAFETY FIRST"; but the innards of the logo seem to have more to do with running an abbey than running a railway. Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

Guys No, it is definitely in another block directly across the road!
Bujutsu, The inside of these have mostly been totally changed over the years. Not sure if there are any untouched at all. Regards DavidR |
