Colombia Departmento Panama with a Black bar overprinting Colombia and "Republic de Panama" overprint in cursive a bit below the bar.

Without the overprint, it is listed as Panama # 3, and as commented in prior posts on SCF, it is know as not being listed under Colombia. It was printed by the American Bank Note Co, who also added the overprint, under contract with Colombia for use in the department of Panama. Department is known in the US as being like a county within a state.

BeeSue first presented this question in 2010:
Quote:
Can anyone explain why this stamp and similar ones inscribed Colombia are listed in Scott under Panama. I realize the map is of Panama, but Panama was not independent until 1903.

On her thread, "wt1" left this most informative link http://www.danstopicals.com/panama1.htm
& further down the thread, "smauggie"also posted excellent info concerning her question.

After a lot of searching on the internet, a catalog number for this stamp is still unknown to me. I have seen a few of the 50c of this series of stamps within a group of stamps, listed on ebay, without reference to it's ID or a catalog number.

I know that one of you will identify this stamp for those interested in Panama and Canal Zone stamps.

Thank you in advance.

PS: I know that this is a long post and I could have simply uploaded the stamp and wrote, "ID this please" and let it go at that, BUT, I thought it would be nice to bring interested parties up to date.

Well Holy Cow even! I sure thought that I had checked Stampworld". Eyes, brain or both going, going, nearly gone! LOL!

Thanks a million rustyc! I really appreciate your speedy help!

I do not have any Scott catalogs except for the 2010 Specialized US Edition...and can't justify the cost to add more catalogs except for perhaps more and updated US. As you probably have noticed, I am holding a foreign stamp giveaway starting the 28th of this month. If enough members take advantage of this, 99% of my foreign stamps will be out of my hair.

Again, rustyc, thanks!

Mudhut,

Your opening post for this thread is great!
It is like getting a letter as opposed to an instant message.

This particular style of overprint was only used in the post office of the City of Colon. Then the largest city in Panama.

smauggie, thank you for furnishing this additional information on the Cursive overprints.

I greatly appreciate the time and thoughtfulness involved in your obtaining this information for us.

Did you already know of this info or did you research it? If so, do you mind telling where you found it?

I spent 2 1/2 years in the CZ starting in 1962 and am familiar with both cities that you mentioned. Well, at least I was 52 years ago.

PS: If you collect Panamanian stamps, you just might want to take advantage of the forthcoming "Foreign Stamp Giveaway"! This stamp will be in there.

I already knew the info, mudhut. I grew up in the Canal Zone and Panama from 1971 to 1998. I have been collecting Panama stamps since the 1970s.
