Started collecting when I attended a stamp collecting meeting that my elementary school principle was heading. He had a large collection (back then for me was large) of only US stamps. I have been collecting on and off since then of just US stamps. I've enjoyed looking at the collection and often tried to make time to mount the various loose stamps that I have collected over the years. It can be a time consuming hobby! All of my teenage sons have no interest in it at all. I think stamp collecting will be around for a long time. There are too many stamps out there to forget about this old hobby of ours!

TurboJay -

Can you direct message me your address and collecting interests? Someone in a thread I started suggested that perhaps you might be interested in some of our extra material. If you would accept these items, I'd be happy to send them.

I tried to send you an email, but was rejected by the system because I am still too new here.

This was the thread:

77 year, Male. I started collecting in 1952-53. when was in high school. First use to buy from Post Office single stamps. than one shop of Philately open in my home town. I started buying some packets
etc. many of them sort of worldwide.

During this period I got many from My parents Business shop correspondence and Parcels etc.
some on and off, but not completely off collecting. In 1971 migrated to Us. Around 1972 started getting stamps from Post Office and Sears etc. Since then Collecting INDIA, USA, CANADA,UNO and Pakistan, very
few Worldwide. Occasionally have purchased from Minkus, Scott and some other companies. But did not like approval packets as my profession did not allow time to respond in time. so buying from
companies stopped. Regularly I get by subscription from USPS,UNO and Canada. Collect single, Blocks, Sheets, S.V.s, and some singles used one.
INDIA from 1947 to 2010 completely arranged in Stock Sheets, Stock books. Now have to arrange USA, Canada, Uno , and Pak. etc.

I do not think Philately will die but there will definitely ups and down.

tikithindi.

I second NorCalCraig's notion.

TurboJay, please respond. I and some others would like to send you our "extras." I've been through a similar situation. You seem to be like me where stamps are an outlet and at very least an enjoyable part of your day.

I and many others would be glad to send you some stamps to help your collection and your happiness.

TurboJay, based on your username, we may have common interests in automobiles. I trained as a SAAB technician during my college years and started a business to pay for college.

NorCalCraig, I do have enough posts to email TurboJay and have done so.

To everyone else who has contributed to this thread:
Thank you for sharing yourselves and your opinions. I enjoyed reading them all.

Family,

I have just returned from my first stamp show in over thirty years. The APS was at the entrance door and they gave me a complimentary copy of the monthly American Philatelist magazine. Inside, there were survey results about the hobby. One of the questions dealt with age. It seems that the vast majority are ages 65-79 (like me!). They then asked me to join. I politely told them that they should be asking my grandchildren.

If the survey results are correct, I fear for the future of this hobby.

Jack Kelley

I'm 66 and I am certain stamp collecting will survive longer than me. It amazes me when I see very early catalogs and albums from the 1860s and 70s, people were fascinated with stamps almost as soon as they were invented, and people continue to show enthusiasm for each new issue. I think stamp collecting will change and wonderful old collections will come to market, but I just can't imagine a world without stamp collectors.

Collectors there always will be but stamps, well maybe not. I foresee those bar codes and printed labels in the future. (I'm 41 years young 42 on Dec the 12)
