One of the oddities that show-up now & again are Punched-Hole Postcards.

I have never figured-out why anyone would punch a hole in a postcard.

Staple holes, thumb tack holes, OK, I get that; but hole punch holes?

BOLO artist Saffron Goetschius!

I think you may have answered your own question. On that link there are 4 words [..collection of "mail art"..] that I think sum it up pretty well. I have never seen a hole-punched post card myself though however so there may be more to it, who knows?
