According to this news report from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, it seems President Obama has signed the re-authorization of the Save Vanishing Species semipostal stamp on September 19, 2014 for an additional four years ... through 2018. This should mean that the stamps will be available for sale at post offices and on-line at the USPS Store anytime now.

Curiously, no mention has been made about this by the mainstream media or from the US Postal Service, nor have the stamps been posted on-line for sale from the USPS Store.

I wonder why the hold up? Perhaps the USPS is possibly waiting until after the 2014 re-issue of the Breast Cancer Research Stamp hits the market?

Wonder what happened to stamp USPS pulled from shelves at the end of 2013? Understand more than 25 million were sold. Were the remaining destroyed? Will newly reissued stamps with 2014 or 2015 date be printed?

None were destroyed. The stamps previously printed remained in inventory and will presumably be sold with the old date on them. Part of the concept for putting the stamps back on the market was that there would be virtually no cost involved to do it, because the existing unsold inventory could continue to be sold as is.

One would have thought that once the Bill to extend the Save Vanishing Species Stamp was approved by Congress and signed by the President of the United States (which he did on 09/10/2014) these stamps would have returned to the post office for sale almost immediately.

Apparently that's not the case, though, as this Linn's article reports:

Quote:
Postal Service spokesman Mark Saunders told Linn's: "They're working through the logistics to get that up for sale again. I don't have anything beyond that right now."

It does make you wonder why more than a month after the extension was signed into Law the idea of returning these stamps to the post office is such a complex issue.

As of today (10/14/2014) the Save Vanishing Species Stamps appears to have returned to the USPS Store's website for sale at 60-cents (49c for postage + 11c for charitable causes):
