Throughout the 2014 Scott catalogues there are references that state "See the Scott Specialized Catalogue of Stamps and Covers for detailed listings."
I purchased a 2001 "1840-1940 Scott Specialized Catalogue of Stamps and Covers" on line and found NO special detailed listings anywhere except for a few covers mentioned.
What gives??? Which catalogue has these special listings???
The Scott Specialized Catalogue of United States Stamps & Covers is a much more detailed catalog than the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue United States and Affiliated Territories United Nations: Countries of the World A-B (Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue Vol 1 Us and Countries a-B). The Specialized contains much more detailed info and varieties of US stamps while the Standard is just a general catalog.
Timm -- I think the explanation is that they keep adding new material to the Classic Specialized pretty much every year.
The Classic is a relatively new product (maybe from the mid-1990s? -- someone on here will know for sure), and it keeps getting more detailed, sometimes with cover values on early classics, sometimes with stamp varieties, sometimes with cancels.
It's important to note that they haven't gotten around to all the major countries yet. For instance, Japan in the 2014 Classic is still pretty much the same as in the main catalog.
If you have a particular country or two in mind, feel free to post your questions on here and someone will likely be able to help.
