Happy Birthday to Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjöld (1905-1961), a Swedish diplomat, economist, and author who served as the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, from April 1953 until his death in a plane crash in September 1961. Hammarskjöld is the youngest person to have held the post, and is one of only three people to be awarded a posthumous Nobel Prize (the 1961 Peace Prize). Here is an image of a stamp depicting Dag Hammarskjöld and the New York City headquarters of the United Nations, designed by Herbert M. Sanborn, engraved by Charles A. Brooks (vignette) and Kenneth C. Wigram (lettering), and issued by the USA on October 23, 1962, Scott No. 1203, plus an image of the Special Printing of this stamp on November 16, 1962 which was made after the discovery of the inverted yellow background error (Scott No. 1203a) of the original issue, Scott No. 1204, and an image of a photograph of Dag Hammarskjöld. - nethryk |
