I don't buy that story.

You don't have to, but I'm telling you, it was rampant in the coin category and many others. A $100 coin for $5 and $95 shipping and the seller would only pay fees on $5. PLUS... back then there was no sort for Price plus shipping- lowest, there was only Price - lowest so they also got to be listed at the top of the cheapest sorts which is the most common.

As a buyer and a seller I like to see the cost charged for shipping as close to the actual price that will be paid. I like be able to reduce shipping on multiple items and will lean towards sellers who allow extra purchases to have reduced or free shipping. Over inflated shipping cost is a turn off. At the end of the day it still comes down to total cost.

Some how you would you think the Feds would handle the process for tax purposes if a $30 item was a buck with $29 shipping. Wouldn't you have to prove that the shipping costs were $29.

The feds would only look at total profit/loss. They just look at how much profit is made in total, not on whether it came from the product or shipping (or both).

Absolutely. Some of the worst offenders were Chinese sellers of consumer electronics and computer equipment, selling items for $1.99 + $499.99 shipping.

Even now, the subsidies that Chinese sellers get from their government re: insanely low shipping costs compared to what Americans have to pay for shipping, gives them an incredible advantage in many ebay categories.

I have been purchasing stamps and lots from sellers in Australia. In most cases the items are shipped with stamps making the resulting cover worth at least the same amount as the shipping cost.

Thats why I started this topic/poll.

Kevin, you should have had a choice that said something on the line of "reasonable charges based on the value of the lot, material and handling and postage costs".
