I am just a general ww collector of pre 1950 stamps. I do not have a lot of reference material other than the Scott Classic. I found this Scott #60 with what appears as an 8 instead of a 3 in the upper right value. It is not a paper scrape. I assume it could just be a printing freak which just happened in the right spot. Is it listed anywhere or do I have a one of kind freak. Appreciate your help.

rascal, my Walsh Newfoundland does not show such a variety. My guess is some type of smudge when it was printed. regards, Theron

Thanks Yakboomer. I appreciate your reply and the look-up. I guess something came between the ink and the paper when the stamp was printed. I will do a little write-up and give it it's own page. It really does look like an 8!

Thanks again.

Rascal,

Thanks for posting. I only collect Newfoundland since 1968 and know this stamp pretty well. It is not a known variety sadly, as YakBoomer notes above. Still its a great little stamp, and the cancel is pretty and the margins are excellent. My guess on the "freak" aspect is either as you hypothesize or it could be damage down the road (like a hinge or sticker or some damage)..it appears to have other surface damage on the UL and far right.

Still, a pretty stamp.

It may interest you to know that this 1890 stamp has no watermark, its earliest known use seen is October of 1893 and there a mind dizzing number of color varieties (at least 6 in the catalog, perhaps more) not including 5 color proofs (brown, violet, blue, green, vermillion imperforates).

Here is my page so you can see some of the color varieties--all perf 12 x 12.

Thanks for your comments Tommy. I like your page. I gave the stamp a bath and managed to eliminate that yellow tint on parts of the stamp.

I will make up a page for this "freak" plus spots for a few shades of this issue.

Thanks again.

I recall that prior post but could not figure out how to find it as fast as Partime (pillar of the community afterall)

Plus, I had not posted my page before, and so I did so now because I know many lurkers out there don't comment but like to live vicariously..

Honestly, I believe that the color varieties of this area might be one of the few unexplored detailed areas of study left to expand. there is the red tint variety which is well researched. but as you can see from my examples above--i have the 5 major colors and the red tint....and another 3 stamps that appear to be different colors. although they might be oxidized or weathered... have a look at your collections

for example, Partime : note that your prior greenish blue gray one from before is similar to the one on my page on LL...hmh...
and share...
