great covers, tommy! I will stick my neck out by noting that the first cover was pmk March 15, 1921 and was backstamped with what looks like Apr 10, 1921. The second cover was pmk March 10, 1921 but was backstamped March 28, 1921. If my foggy memory serves, the 2nd cover is somewhat rare?
yes, yakboomer, on the date differences. another one of those examples of paying close attention to the non-stamp details on a cover and having good references. i'm nuts about first flight covers now, and on a mission. these were the 6th first flight according to Walsh/Butts (or 7th if you use the bible AAMC). Either way, this 1921 flight had 4 different flavors (all around Botwood to Fogo in March:
1 (FF6). St Johns cancel March 9 or 10 and round trip with backstamp on March 28 at St Johns. More or less the standard typical one 2 (FF6a). St Johns cancel March 9 or 10 with backstamp at Fogo with March 28 cancel. Also common but address was in Fogo so backstamped there and never made it back to St Johns. (one of my covers above) 3. (FF6b) St Johns March 15 (a later cancel but same plane) to Fogo with BS there on April 10. Much less common and one of my covers above 4. (FF6c) Fogo on March 28 to St Johns and front stamped there on April 4. The rarest of these due to origin being from Fogo.
I suppose one could argue all these are Philatelic in nature (that dirty word) because most or all of these covers were from collectors or folks responding to newspaper advertisements to post a letter and be part of the mad capped history of planes flying through snow. still, I like them
Also--i note the images above are gone, and I will try to repost them tonight (unless you know who can restore them cleverly from google...)
