I recently acquired the Israel 1952 Menorah stamp and noticed that it had a postmark from 1970 a full 18 years after its issue. I thought it was a bit strange that someone would use it for postage so long after its issue, especially considering that Israel moved from valuing stamps in Prutot to Agorot in 1960. Also I would imagine that by 1970 the value of this stamp in MNH condition would be considerably higher than its use as regular postage. Is such a late postmark on this issue considered very unusual?

It seems in really good shape to have gone through the mails. Perhaps a favor cancel. Does it have gum on the back?

I agree and suspect that if the stamp did legitimately go through the mail, it was probably philatelic in nature, as most non-collectors would not have left that large selvage intact on a stamp that was merely to be used to pay postage. Only stamp collectors would do that!

There is no gum. Another person suggested to me that perhaps there was a stain and the previous owner had it cleaned, gum removed, and then cancelled.

I can't add anything else to the cancel theories, but what is the black spot in the left corner ? Is it printed on or hand-made with a pen ?

Come and visit more often ashuber, where are you in this little country ?

I agree that it was most likely a philatelic cover in nature. and of course that minorrah is buried on Oak Island, Nova Scotia... ;) [the money pit] It's a USA legend that people pour billions of dollars into finding if you didn't know? -

To Londonbus1: I think the black spot is from a pen or something - don't really know. I'm in Petach Tikvah origianlly from the US and moved to Israel 5 years ago. I was recently at the Tsachor auction in Tel Aviv but did not win any items. In retrospect it was a good thing as I did very well in the David Feldman auction that contained a lot of good deals in my opinion.

Have you been to the philatelic library in Tel Aviv? I have been meaning to go buy my schedule is rough and they are only open on Thursdays?
