Maybe I should have been a bit more vague when I asked about what effect lighter fluid has on the gum of mint stamps. Its only a guess, but from the posts since mine, it appears 'those in the know' say lighter fluid is okay to use on mint stamps. If I'm wrong in that assumption, I'll find out the hard way. Good job I'm used to that method. Yes, its fairly obvious that since used stamps usually don't have gum, there is no problem with gum damage.
Please, Please, Please help. I'd like a clear, definite, on-topic, succinct, yes or no answer to a question I have tried to get a reply to here before: can lighter fluid be used to detect watermarks on mint (gummed) stamps without damaging/devaluing the stamp?
Yep, when the lighter fluid dries, the gum on the stamp looks exactly as it did before applying the fluid - it leaves no trace. The stamp gum does not dissolve in lighter fluid as it would in water.
In a different field, picture framers rely on lighter fluid a lot. They can be very fussy about conservation practices over the long term, but also, the finished product is meant to be looked at, so stains etc. are unacceptable on cotton rag mats etc. I don't recall ever reading a comment about lighter fluid leaving a residue on the framers forum I belong to.
