Stamp Insider for January-February 2015

The January-February issue of the Stamp Insider, journal of the Federation of New York Philatelic Societies, is online and available for free download in PDF format or viewing online with page turning. It is available in both PDF and HTML5-friendly format at:

http://www.stampinsider.org

In the lead article — "Vermont Ski Resort Post Offices" — Glenn A. Estus provides an in-depth history of seasonal post offices that once provided mail service to guests. All are now closed. He follows up in his Vermont Philatelic Society column with the fascinating story of "The 7/1/71 Affair," when Stratton Mountain serviced first day covers for the eight-cent USPs stamp (Scott 1396).

Other articles include "A Kid Friendly National Postal Museum" that describes NPM exhibits and activities attractive to youngsters, "Honey Money" which explores New Zealand revenue tax stamps on honey from 1938-1967, and part one of "Literature and Stamp Collecting in which John H. Bloor of the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library explainswhy "every collector should have a personal library."

The featured video is "The Spider Press," which shows how a two-person hand press was used to produce US stamps from its first issues until as late at 1920, including the bicolored 24-cent Jenny airmail. The error occurred when the unique single pane either had the plate reversed or the sheet was loaded backwards.

In a relatively short span, I have come to look forward to each new issue of this neat publication.

I download new issues of The Stamp Insider more often than I remember to say 'Thank You, Glenn'.

What a lovely magazine. I hadn't read it before, but I have to start to do so.
