Bureau Color And Type Confirmation

I would greatly appreciate a word of confirmation, or correction, on my first attempt, to ID the color and type, of these Bureau stamps. I intend to check for watermarks, later, to find the right Scott number.

I believe they are all Type III's, as the triangle borders do not have lines in them, and the letter 'T', in to the word 'Two', is not curved on the edge.

I have done a search, and reviewed the threads on color, looked at theswedishtiger, and 1847usa, as well as the Scott catalog. I have the specialized catalog on order. What I am using is Volume I of the catalogs, right now.

looks like your on to it pretty good. It's of course hard to say with the difference in monitor color but it seems you have at least most of what I can see.I'm sure there will be differences of opinion though...them correct from

I know, right? Theswedishtiger, if I use that as a guide, shows that the second and third stamps I posted, and labelled red and scarlet, are actually carmine and dark carmine. The fourth is scarlet, and I have no clue what the fifth one is. It is darker than pink, in the first example, but has a more pink cast to it, than the second and third stamps. Those two definately look reddish, and not pink.

I compared the fourth one to the 220's I have, which are called carmine, but they are Banknotes, and I know the Bureau was new to printing stamps, so they might have different colors and I should not use those to compare them to.

I did look for watermarks, on the four examples that are not 'on paper' (the second one is, and I've not taken it off, it is cancelled as a MA stamp, and I'd like to keep it on that cover, so that I know it goes with my MA's once I identify it). There were none that I could see.

The first stamp, the pink, has a bit of paper left on it, so I could not see a watermark, but, given the pink type III's, do have watermarks, according to Scott's, I am trusting the catalog, rather than my inexperienced ability to see a watermark through paper. Scott's says pink type III's are 267a, so I'm going with the type, which I can tell, and the color, which I am more certain about, than the others, with Scott's information. (Unless, someone comes on here and tells me otherwise.)

So, if the second and third stamps are actually carmine and dark carmine, then they would be 252's, and the fourth, is scarlet, it would be a 252a.

Imagine Steve Martin, the comedian, throwing the back of his hand against his forehead, and exaggeratingly exclaiming "Oooh, I'm SOOOO conFUSED!"

I can only speculate and recap... I think they are:

1. Pink, type III - 267a
2. Carmine, type III - possible 252 - need to see watermark
3. Dark Carmine tpye III - no watermark -252
4. Scarlet type III - 252a
5. ?

This is an older thread that is being bumped but folks should note that IDing stamp colors via images is not advisable.

Thanks, and I so agree. Scanners, monitors. light etc can all change the hue of a color. One can only validate a color in person and even then that color may have been changed by UV light, humidity etc. Color is a minefield

Not all appear to be type III. The images are not large enough to be sure. Some are type IV colors.
