Hi there,

I'm new to this forum and am not a stamp collector, so I apologize if this is in the wrong place. I am the art director for an online magazine about coastal science and societies. We are doing a short piece about William Dampier and I'm looking to get my hands on a high-resolution image of the stamp. As I understand it, the stamp is in public domain, but the only images I can find online are relatively small.

Does anyone have nay suggestions of how I might go about obtaining a high-res image?

Thank you!
Mark

Can't help on this, but Australia also issued a Dampier stamp some years ago - may be easier to locate a decent web image of that.

Interesting subject - pirate and explorer!

Regards.

Thanks for the suggestion, Geoff. The Australian stamp seems to be more prevalent, but Australia has a 50 year copyright on their stamps, whereas Ecuador puts them directly into public domain. I can only imagine that dealing with Australia's postal service to try to get licence to reproduce it would be a huge headache!

Hi Hakai, The 5 shilling version of the Australian Dampier stamp was issued on 25th November, 1964 which means it has justed turned fifty. The image was based on an engraving in the National Library of Australia, Canberra. Cheers, Stephen

Maybe find a stamp dealer, or ebay listing, and buy a copy of the Ecuador stamp and make your own photo?

I seem to remember a Christmas Island issue on famous explorers that included a William Dampler stamp. I don't know the copyright limits on Christmas Island stamps though.

Thanks for all the help, everybody! It's really appreciated.

StevieG: That's great. I even found a photo of that stamp on a stock site, so it'll likely be the winner.

DonSellos: I'll check that one out, too. Christmas Island is a territory of Australia, so presumably their stamps would follow the same copyright.

Smauggie: Thanks, that's the guy I was originally looking at. Was just hoping to get a bigger image.

I also emailed Ecuador's postal service (using Google Translate) and they got back to me pretty prompty saying that they had forwarded the email to the appropriate department. So, with a little luck we can use both stamps. Thanks again, everybody!
