Russ:
When/if you have time, how about scanning an inside page or two from "A Description of U.S. Postage Stamps"
I don't care which stamps or year - maybe one of your favorites. I'd just like to see the inside ... photos? descriptions? charts? etc...

I just won a copy of " A Description of United States Postage Stamps 1847- 1943". Looks like we are along the same lines Russ. Quote: Books we wished we owned....
I still kick myself for not buying when it was offered at $350. The Encyclopedia of the Colors of United States Postage |

Neat thread, wasn't aware of it before today Here is my favorite book, which professes what many would call stamp sacrilege -- cutting them up to make pretty designs. |

Don't remember exactly where I acquired this, but it is a nice old-time reference of the Prexie Series Stamps ... including some proposed designs not accepted for inclusion in the series: I've asked about it before, but had no response, so it must be a relatively obscure piece. |

Thanks Russ. That is really neat. I'd wouldn't mind having a pristine set of those "Ordinary Stamps of 1890" I didn't expected color, but I was curious if it had lots of photos and information. I like the table under the photos. Very nice, Kirk |

I have the 36th Edition of The Postal Service Guide to U.S. Stamps - the price guide the USPS puts out under Harper Collins. Received it as a gift and use it more often than originally thought. All prices are from the same year Scott Catalog and also includes information like quantity manufactured (when available) that Scott does not. Not as useful as the Scott US Specialized but a handy reference that opens flat (spiral bound), displays all the images of stamps on a separate page opposite the listing data (which I think is easier to browse), and is a good size for reading in the bathroom! |

Wow, great libraries. I've hung onto these booklets, all copyright 1972 (the Stamp Finder is still useful and the ABC's has a perforation chart on the back) from my childhood collecting days. Also have a disintegrating 1974-75 Harris US/Canada catalogue to keep track of my collection, and Scotts 1994 D-I and 2002 C-F. Plus the public library. |

My Indian States collection rather dominates my philatelic bookshelf Alwar Alwar Handbook, Benns, India Study Circle, 1972 Bahawalpur The Amirate of Bahawalpur, Postal History & Stamps (1932-1949), Isani, 2006 Bamra Bamra Handbook, Benns, India Study Circle, 1982 Bhopal Bhopal Handbook, Davies, India Study Circle, 1975 Bundi - The Sacred Cows Issues of Bundi, Benns, India Study Circle, 1986 - Bundi, The "Sacred Cows" 1915-1941, Burgess and Sturton, (circa 1960) Bussahir Bussahir, Bateman (date?) Cochin - Stamps of Cochin, Luiz, 1972 - Cochin Postmarks and Cancellations, Pai, 1974 Gwalior A Handbook on Gwalior Postal History and Stamps (1837-1950), Gupta, 1980 Hyderabad - History of Postal Administration in Hyderabad, Nayeem, 1970 - Hyderabad Philatelic History, Nayeem, 1980 Jammu & Kashmir The Stamps of Jammu and Kashmir, Staal, 1983 Soruth Soruth Handbook, Wood and Meher, India Study Circle 1999 Wadhwan Wadhwan Handbook, Benns, India Study Circle, 1990
General - Gibbons Part I 1941 (lists and prices the Bhopal reprints/imitations, Dhar missing frame line varieties, Jhalawar 'wove paper' varieties etc) - The I.N.S. Illustrated Priced Catalogue of the Indian Native States, Burgess, (undated - circa 1960) (fairly simplified by today's standards, but has occasional useful snippets, like separate pricing of stamps showing watermarks for Jaipur SG 22-39)
If anyone needs the odd page or two from any of them, I'll be happy to help. |
