Wert, what makes you think it is a precancel? Looks more like an overprint to me?

Just found it..It is a Scott FWT7a...Mystery over...

But it IS a precancel..

They are precancels. You can also find them inverted.

This is the FWT7a in the Van Dam catalogue.

It is a precancel but I don't have any more info than that.

I knew I had this kicking around that is similar to wert's original posting. This is the same war tax stamp, but, manually crossed out. It was used as war tax on a package of wooden matches. The original wooden matches are still in the box. I keep them in a metal box inside a metal filing cabinet.

This is just one usage of a WT stamp.

Thanks for the plug cjd. I'm continually on the hunt for more war tax stuff, including match books with the war tax imprints. No luck yet (yes, nice box bujutsu. It is great to see those in situ).
I never did discover where the X precancel came from, but still looking.
