I've just started assembling a collection of Malayan States 'Small Heads'.
A few years ago (between 2 and 5 years I guess) I read an article in one of the British magazines about these stamps - I think it had a focus on KEVI issues, and some images of blocks of yellow stamps.
I don't remember which mag - probably Gibbons Stamp Monthly, Stamp Magazine or possibly Stamp & Coin Mart. Anyhow, I'd like to read it again - does anyone recall this article, or at least, which magazine it was in? If I can identify the mag, I can hunt down a copy.
It's a long shot I know, but here's hoping...

Go here... http://www.malayastudygroup.com/Scroll down left hand side to GSM Articles on Malaya... or thereabouts. If you find anything of relevance dated 2010 onwards I have access to all those Gibbons magazines and could forward a PDF. |

GSM covered Malaya most recently in a two part series in March and April 2014.

I checked those two Malaya articles and they deal with stamp shortages there between 1899 up to 1901. Ringo's request is a bit ambiguous in that he mentions "KEVI" which could mean King Edward 7 (KEVII) or King George 6 (KGVI) ?. As a non-collector of Malaya apart from a small Empire collection... I can only suggest specifying or narrowing the field slightly and I could search my GSM archived magazines (2010 onwards) for anything appropriate. |

Thanks everyone. Sorry for the ambiguity - I just can't remember all that much.
KEVI was a typo - I meant KGVI - I seem to remember the images of the yellow George VI head stamps, although that too might be wrong! There were dfinitely some impressive images though.
I've looked at the sites suggested. It's not on the Study Group site. Also, I couldn't find it by searching APS online. Perhaps it wasn't GSM then - in which case Stamp Magazine is the most likely.
I wish I could recall more. I'm sure it was before 2013, but after 2007, which is vague, but gives a general idea. I recall the thrust of the article was that these stamps are great to collect - loads of variety and interesting aspects, and often not too pricey. It planted a seed in my mind, which is why I'm now starting to collect them.
Should have kept a copy! |

Would you by chance be referring to an article about the KG VI stamps that were overprinted "BMA MALAYA"? If so, an article did appear in the GSM for December 1998.
I might have these because I scanned a great deal of articles into my computer and recycled the actual paper articles. I am still scanning a great deal of them actually.

This article is all I can find meantime on Gibbons Stamp Monthly... small part reproduced below. It is part of a five page article entitled "Malaya's One and Only Comprehensive Set of Stamps and Postal Stationery" and cover the years 1949 to 1960. Probably not item specific to "small Heads". It comes from GSM May 2010. |

Thanks everyone - and thank you Scotzm - I'm certain that's the one! I'm really grateful. It was those scans which I mis-remembered as a block of stamps, but I guess it was the first time I'd seen all the state issues side-by-side like that.
It's listed on the Study Group's site, but no scans, so I'll have to track down a copy of the mag.
Thanks once again. I'd spent ages trying to find it myself! |
