I polled the first question. The answer to the 2nd question is that I don't use any sites for my stamp photos. It makes the answer to the first question academic in my case... :-)

Couldn't you easily create an online document containing the images which is password protected?

I use picasaweb, part of the google complex.

I've set the permission to "Limited"- anyone with a link.

But when I post an image on stamp forums, I elect no link- just image.

Hello,
I do not publish my collection, so I chose answer 2.
But I must say that for another forum I the only way to show scans is to use PhotoBucket.
So those scans can be seen by everyone; this really does not disturb me because those scans do not show anything worthwhile (financially).

Although I do store images of my collections on the web at PhotoBucket and Imgur, and use Google's Picasa 3, I keep all of those private and post optimized and cropped photos and scans from my computer.

The reason I ask this question is that many collectors worry about someone breaking into their home and stealing their collection. Many people think stamps are worth a small fortune so they can make a lot of money selling te collection off. Many collectors insure their collections (rider of their homeowners policy)because their Home Owners Insurance will only cover their collection up to $2500 against Fire, water or Theft. My real thought was many collectors use outside web sites like Photobucket to post pictures of their collection on the different Stamp Forums. Leaving them vulnerable to prying eyes. Anyone on the web can see them. Making them attractive to thieves. We know that with a few exceptions our collections are really not worth a lot of money but people that don't collect or have much knowledge about stamp values. Think anyone that has a stamp collection has a fortunes worth of stamps making the collection attractive/vulnerable to thieves.

Think about that.
