Hi, Can anyone help me with a few perfins I found at an stamp-gathering? Can't find them on the Internet, not even on the Perfinsociety. Any help appreciated!

Many, many perfins are hard to identify. Thousands of companies, societies etc had their stamps done and there is no "master list". Basically you need to hunt around to find a similar one to aid identification. Occasionally you get them identified from online sources... some are listed on SCF so look around. Some perfins were only done by companies etc on specific stamp values, during certain periods (some companies did not survive or were taken over so their perfins do not exist past a certain date). Your George V twopence halfpenny stamp (which can be improved by floating off the backing) may hold a clue in that the postmark is SHEFFIELD so, for instance you could look for a company from there that used "G" perfins.

First of all, there is Great Britain catalog. There are actually 2 of them. The first is the old Tomkins Catalog (issued 1993), and the brand new (very large) Catalof which has one more letter in a few months and it will be complete. It is NOT inexpensive however. The patterns you have shown are: HM/Co has four possibilities. Need MM measurements to positively ID this. Measure from center of bottom hole to center of top hole on all letters. PL/Ld = PAwson & Leafs Ltd., London G = J G Graves, Sheffield
Hope this helps. |

Thanks you both! And PoStat4evR: I'll measure it up this evening. Hopefully you are willing to help me once more.
And the catalogue, yes you're right: that would be helpful, were it not that I only have a few tens of them.
Greetings from Holland! |

as already mentioned, the Tomkins will help identify around 10,000 perfins. The identities of the other 20,000 (approx) known to exist are the problematic ones. |

The newer catalog updates it big time... or so I am told. Haven't picked up my copy yet, but will in May or so... |
