There was an 1882 2c Rose perf 12 (instead of 14) in older Scotts It had a high value in mint only ($750 in 1940) It was just ahead of the 12c on $10 rose now #50 later on it was deemed a proof This may be the missing # you are asking about
Scott changed the numbers. In the old catalog they were by issue date - now they are grouped together. That is the one that was removed before what is now #50. Based on what a #50 was then & now, the 2c Rose would be worth about $100m today. If you look at a 2009 Scott it mentions a 2c Rose proof above the #50
I have the 1937 and 1961 editions of Scott. The 2c rose, perf. 12, is valued at $750 in both editions. So, if you factor in inflation, the stamp actually lost value during that time period.
The 1994 edition values the stamp at $15,000, so it seems to have recovered a bit.
Cheers, Robert
Edit: In the 1999 edition, the stamp is delisted with a note added saying it is a proof--no value assigned.
