Does anybody know what kind of stamp mounts. The name of mounts that are sealed on all four sides. Who makes them. They are not Crystal Mounts unless.

Might be able to identify it if we could see one. "sealed on all four sides"......how do you insert a stamp? |

You put the stamp in the mount and probably seal the one side open to seal it in on all four sides. |

I don't know but I hate it when I get stamps that are in those things. I've gotten stamps before that were sealed up so close and tight it took the skill of a surgeon to extricate them from their plastic tombs. |

Not for sure of the company or what the correct name is but I think you are talking about reversible blank stamp mounts maybe? I think the mounts have 4 flanges or sides with one flange being to where you fold three flanges or sides over and use the other as a glue down part to an album or you can fold the 4th flange or side over to make a box mount as in making an encapsule. Kind of what you get when you have a stamp expertized? But then I'm a Newby at this stuff. |

Yes you both are very warm or right on target. They look professionally sealed. It would take a surgeon and scalpel to remove the stamps if someone wanted to remove them from the mounts. |

Yes, I also had to remove stamps from mounts like that. With my shaky hands, it was a miracle I got them all out with no damage. The sealed mounts I saw seemed to be home made, or at least of the "fold your own sides" variety as some were crooked. |

Hi Tinman
My response from someplace else:
They were called PM mounts. They came in different sizes and were sealed on three sides. You inserted the stamp at the top opening and then folded the clear film over, thus sealing the stamp inside the mount. The back of the mount had some sort of self sticking adhesive. To put the mount into an album you peeled the backing paper and stuck the mount onto the album page.
They are as bad, if not worse, than Crystal mounts. The stamp could not "breath" and the backing paper stuck to the stamp gum. You can usually tell a previously PM mounted stamp by the black fibers on the backof the stamp. A lot of people did not seal the top, myself included, and trimmed the top film flap. I guess I was one of the lucky ones. After I dumped a drawer full of these things in the garbage and removed the stamps from the mounts I lost only a few stamps. Since I use quadrille blank pages exclusively it was a marathon re-mounting session using Showgard mounts.

Thanks Jerry you described them to a "T" and just what I suspected. I suppose it's easiest to cut the stamps out of the mounts using an exacto knife. Am I correct? |

So, there was a level of hell BELOW the one where Crystal Mounts were made? |

PM (Protective Mounts) are still being sold as "NOS" (new old stock) on ebay. Checkout this link ... for the 1960s-1970s version (you can tell by the 5-digit ZIP Code in the manufacturer's address): http://www.ebay.com/itm/PM-Vintage-...815449&rt=ncNote the seller's comments: Quote: Each PM mount had a self adhesive backing, flat black face, and clear plastic cover piece that came folded over 3 sides with a fold down 4th side. (many users preferred to cut this 4th plastic side off rather than folding it down so that access to the stamp was still possible.) By folding the 4th side down and sticking it against the self adhesive back the stamp became fully encased in the mount. There's also an older version from the 1950s-1960s that is shown below: This is what the actual product looked like: |
