The term troll is derived from "trolling", as in fishing. Like casting out your bait (comment) and waiting for something to bite.

It's not particularly derogatory in its intended form, however, it's overabundant misuse by people who don't understand its meaning has transformed it to be much more derogatory than it really is.

Welcome back :) Had you left we would send out the dog teams to track you down. You are solely to blame for my addiction to engraved stamps so your exit pass has been revoked.

Glad you reconsidered Litho. Hope they don't reset your posts back to 1 for being new again.

You know -IBFS that mightn't be a bad idea since I feel new
and refreshed again but also humbled when I think how truly
wonderfully sincere people are on this forum.

I'm glad you are sticking around but it could have all been done privately and without the melodrama of you had contacted the admin team first, their immediate response was they had dealt with your nemesis prior to your initial post.

A troll is a "troublemaker". One who incites discord.

WHAT IS A TROLL ?--------"message board troll"--------is a person who post outrageous messages to bait people to answer .
The problem on the stamp chat boards, it is used to insult . If you can't support your point of view and back it up ,then just call the other party "a TROLL".
There are times the chat board gets boring and lacks new philatelic content ,it seems everybody falls asleep .So throw out a grenade ,to get people saying something .
There are people who just read the board and sit in the balcony and never seem to find something to say . I pride myself in getting these people active and getting them to post their first post or to get people posting who have not posted for a while . So to raise their blood pressure to respond .
I don't believe in throwing out insults and starting a personel fight but there is nothing wrong to get another poster to support and explain their statement .

SO BE CAREFUL WHO YOU CALL A TROLL

I am also intrigued by how one defines "Troll". I think we can all agree that the term Troll is mostly derogatory, or meant as an insult to someone. ("You're a Troll") Therefore, I think that some of us throw around this term much too often and would be better off using other, non-derogatory words.

Don't use these words (or only sparingly).

Wrong. This is too harsh and to the point. Better to dance around the issue a bit.
False. This should be used less often than Wrong, as it implies you have some facts to support your case.
Misleading. A little less harsh, but still implies that someone is deliberately making inaccurate statements.
Liar. Ooh. Don't go there.
Troll. Our current problem.

Instead, try these politically correct phrases.

"I think you should consider this other option ..."
"Interesting idea, but I think ..."
"I have also seen this before, but at that time we concluded ..."
"What you are saying is plausible, but ..."
"I saw the same thing at this other link <> and they said ..."
"That is very unique. Never saw that or heard about it before."
"Some monitors don't show the colors the same as others. You may want to check it against a known sample."
"The best way to verify <your claim> is to compare it against <specific stamp>"
"I'll check my supply and comment later."

I think you get the general idea. Everyone have a good day.

I would like to explain something. Gd states that I could have avoided all this melodrama if I had reported it to the admin.
Well this guy had support from other members so how could I tell the admin to ban him?

If you read through the whole thread I did not call him atroll
until after he started getting personal and nasty.

What I wanted to call him was a ***t disturber but that is censored on this board.

Wikipedia definition (amongst others)states a troll has the deliberate intent of provoking readers
into an emotional response

I would say that the way he was taunting me he was definitely a nasty troll.

Like I said before he was getting a lot of sympathetic responses from forum members
so how could I turn to admin to have him removed ?

Since there was no way I would stay on this forum with him constantly taunting me I figured it's best
to leave and that is what I did.

It wasn't until I received some PMs from forum members
and checked into the forum that I realized that bobby had banned him.

Could I have handled it different?
Perhaps. But he upset me enough to make me quit a forum
which I have been on for over four years and enjoyed
tremendously.

Yes he was a troll and he will probably be back with another
Id.
