OK, I know that this may be a odd observation but what makes this lot so very valuable? I see those carrier stamps (of Ben and with the tags still attached too) sell for substantially less and I have the other example (the eagle) on cover and the cut-squares, unless exceptionally rare speak for themselves. So the $11,424.50 dollar question...why 10 thousand Euros?

well, the second stamp on the 5th scan - the 12c "First Design" (formerly Scott 59), if real, catalogs at about $80K. Only 16 certified copies are known.

There are a few certs shown, but the two stamps that really need one - the LO1 and the 59 don't have them shown.

I'm glad you asked. I thought it mght be my broad ignorance of US rarities, but I didn't see the €50,000-€100,000 in CV that collectors would presumably be looking for at this price.

If this WERE a €10,000 lot, wouldn't you normally expect to find it in a real, flesh-and-blood auction? Or maybe I'm just out of touch with ebay sales, aside from disposing of the stuff that's blocking up my house!

Geoff

The level of wealth in some parts of the world is such that the seller may well get his price in an online auction. Collectors expecting quality and correct identification certainly would want to identify these lots in person, or adjust the CV downward if they could not. The seller may be pricing this more like 40% or 50% of CV to see what happens.

I thought that the banner lots were, by definition, SCF-member lots. No?

I admit that I don't study them closely.

If the lot is worth anything like the asking, much more effort needs to be put into the presentation.

I agree with the need for better presentation. A number of better catalog value stamps (not necessarily with better condition), have catalog # shown next to them, but not the possible Scott 59. From experience, that is one of the problems with getting a decent price for group lot like these (condition, not identifying key items).
