For several years now, my children have rolled their eyes at me an my hobby, and tolerated my collection.
Today I received a message from my youngest daughter at university asking my help regarding a WWI post card (for a friend of hers, but still). Suddenly, it comes in handy.
So! Who's a nerd now????

Real nerds collect used stamps on postcards.

Or is that used Machins?

No, no, it's Canada partial POCONs.

Nice to see the family inherited some sense from you.

I think the age at which they realize Dad has "grown" needs to be postponed to about 30 now. I teach the 18-22-year-olds in college (and have done so for 40 years) and they are still adolescents even at 22. The culture has not forced them to grow up until their late 20s, most of them. It's not their fault but the fault of what I call the "mommification" of society. Anyone who tries to push them, challenge, provoke them to grow up is "mean" and micro- or macro-aggressive. What used to be called "acting like a father" [like giving grades below B+] has become "being mean to the li'l darlings."

There are exceptions, of course. All of the late teen and early 20s children of members of SCF are exceptions, of course. The prolonged adolescence applies elsewhere, of course.

Wert -- that is one of my favorite quotes. My Dad and I have a long-running joke about it.

And now that I'm 50 and he's 80, I think he is the smartest/wisest man I've ever met. I am so blessed to have him for a father.

The 'original' of the quote is usually attributed to Mark Twain but in recent years, there has been some doubt if he actually said it.

Quote:
"When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."

Say what you will about stamp collectors. I play a game on the computer called Trivia Crack and I can't begin to count the number of questions I get right because of stamp collecting. It cetainly diversifies one's knowledge.

Now if I could just take that to Jeopardy and make some money ! I'd probably just spend it on stamps. lol
