I found this in a collection and saw that it was listed as Sc #4a with an italics catalog value of $3250 for used and no value for unused. I thought at first that this was because it couldn't be certified if unused but the are other similar Zanzidar overprints are all priced for used and unused. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Maybe the spelling ( the 'd' rather than 'b' ) depends on the letters being spelt in their minds as Indian (upside down to ours) instead of English.

Correct spelling anyway:

I don't know about your overprint though. Neat to have and figure out.

The following 'Zanzidar' variety was offered for sale at a major German auction house - as is. No certificate.

In the listing is was noted that the overprint is similar to a 'normal' (genuine) and that the 2nd Z is small - as it should be.

I don't have any expertized copies.

Both of the posted certified stamps have a lower case z the same size as the rest of the letters, not several font sizes smaller.

According to Gibbons the Zanzidar variety exists on two positions of the printing plate, presumably one with small Z and with with normal second Z

4/6 & 8/5.

The 1a. Plum is listed in Gibbons as s.g. 4j.

It should be sent for expertization,

Pagoda

By the way, regarding pagoda's post, this setting is identified by SG as the R4/6 position, and the overprint is supposed to be slightly blue-black on these.

At least 6 basic types of overprint exist
There are others but they are very rare such as red instead of black
The z was printed normal & in smaller case
The Zanzidar was a misprint, some are rare
Because of their value there are many forged overprints especially the blue overprint on the 1/2a & 1a
Also a lot of forged cancellations particularly those that say "Bombay"

Apparently in 1895 large quantities of stamps from India were surcharged at the offices of the Zanzibar newspaper by locals and a lot of "errors" were produced.
I don't know about catalog listings, my interests are classic forgeries.

Just glanced at submissions, there are some obvious inconsistencies in the one posted by ClassicalStamps - (German auction) as well as the first post.

In marketing the used 1-anna 4j, above, Gibbons says five are known to exist in private hands and one is in the royal collection.

I used the APS QuickID service where you submit an image and they give you an ID for $5. After less than 1 hour they gave me this opinion;

Quick ID Findings: This appears to be Zanzibar, Scott No. 4a, Zanzidar" overprint, unused, unpriced in Scott or Gibbons, so overprint is suspect. Requires formal certification to confirm authenticity. Recommend the Royal Philatelic Society, London.

I think I've done all I'm going to do with this stamp. Does anyone want to Guesstimate how much the 3 stamps will fetch on ebay? I'm going to use the APS info in the description.

Guess nobody read my posting here .......so I was a little upset . Went on E-BAY this morning and low and behold there is a ONE ANNA with the Zanzibar over print on it with the small "z" for $5.00 ,but the interesting part was the description in the offer . The seller states the one you receive will maybe be slightly different than the one pictured .Ok .......how many different small Z overprints does he have ? ......LOL ....I guess I should buy it for a forgery page in my forgery collection and will post it here one day .
