I received my new 2008 Scott's Catalog Volume 3 in hardback and CD the other day.
I was very pleased with the hardcopy version. It seems to have much better, glossier paper than my older volumes, it's easier to read and I think the stamp illustrations are even sharper.
I was disappointed with the CD however. It cannot be downloaded to my laptop so I have to cart the 2-CD case with me everywhere I go. That was not the case when I bought one in 2004. I knew you couldn't print from the new version but I really like being able to have the catalog without having to deal with the slow response of the CD. The fetch time drives me crazy when I'm in a hurry!
I just realized that we need a thumbs down Smilie!
Yeah. But the problem is that if you could download it to your laptop, than you (or anyone else) could UPLOAD it to the Internet and it would be all over the place in no time.
I don't have the CD's, but I'm guessing they're also copy protected.
Saw a suggestion recently that the Scott Catalogue (after all this time in America they still use the British spelling and the spell checker here doesn't like it) be placed online for maybe a $50 per year subscription to pick of a lot of the collector market that isn't willing to part with a few hundred dollars for a printed or CD set.
When Scott first published their catalogue, it was just that, a catalog from which collectors could purchase stamps. I guess this is still true of the Stanley Gibbons catalogue in the UK, IF they happen to have the stamps listed.
They are protected Prince. And you're right about hacking the CS's. It's still aggravating to have to cart them around with me when I'm on the road though.
Maybe I need to hire me a 10 year old to hack these!
